The landscape gives us a great view, doesn’t it? When you turn your back on the landscape, you see a girl carrying a black bag in her hand, a black bag with no hope in it. This girl is a reflection of the neighborhood where she lives. A girl who is othered in the city where she lives, is not wanted to be seen, is looked at as a criminal or has criminal potential, grows up in a subculture and social anxiety… This reason led her to think that the garbage thrown on the floor belonged to this girl, and she made his way home with a black bag filled with garbage, with no hope in it. Wishing this and other marginalized children to end.
This is Kadifekale /Izmir in Turkey. It is one of the first slums of Izmir. It has narrow streets and adjoining houses. It’s where neighborly relations are strong. We can describe it as’ the place where poverty lives’. It is a place whose landscape resembles luxury places, but not like that.
Why are those particular photographs important to your research?
Because these photos give us what’s behind what’s visible. If you look directly at the view, it can look like a luxury place. It may sound like it’s the right of luxury places, but this is a place that bears the mark of an entire city. We have to look behind what appears, because there is the reality of the city. An unwelcome reality to be seen. And in these photos, there are real traces.

El paisaje nos ofrece una gran vista, ¿no? Cuando le das la espalda al paisaje, ves a una niña que lleva un bolso negro en la mano, un bolso negro sin esperanzas. Esta niña es un reflejo del barrio donde vive. Una niña que está alojada en la ciudad donde vive, no se quiere que la vean, se la mire como delincuente o tiene potencial delictivo, se cría en una subcultura y ansiedad social… Este motivo la llevó a pensar que la basura arrojada sobre el piso pertenecía a esta chica, y ella se dirigió a su casa con una bolsa negra llena de basura, sin esperanzas en ella. Deseando que este y otros niños marginados terminen.
Esto es Kadifekale / Izmir en Turquía. Es uno de los primeros barrios marginales de Izmir. Tiene calles estrechas y casas contiguas. Es donde las relaciones de vecindad son fuertes. Podemos describirlo como “el lugar donde vive la pobreza”. Es un lugar cuyo paisaje se asemeja a lugares de lujo, pero no así.
¿Por qué es importante esta fotografía en particular en su investigación?
Porque estas fotos nos dan lo que hay detrás de lo visible. Si miras directamente a la vista, puede parecer un lugar de lujo. Puede parecer que es el derecho de los lugares de lujo, pero este es un lugar que lleva la marca de toda una ciudad. Hay que mirar detrás de lo que aparece, porque ahí está la realidad de la ciudad. Una realidad desagradable para ser vista. Y en estas fotos hay huellas reales.
