En las calles cercanas a “Plaza de la Dignidad”, durante el desarrollo de la revuelta popular, se comenzaron a ver nuevos repertorios de protesta, más bien, nuevos tipos de resistencias, ante las arremetidas represivas de las fuerzas policiales. La primera de ellas es la denominada “primera línea”, que es el conjunto de manifestantes que se agrupan con escudos, cascos y otros elementos, encabezando los enfrentamientos con la policía. Su accionar representa una forma de protección para los demás manifestantes, frente a la represión policial, como se observa en la primera fotografía. Luego, están los “pirquineros”, encargados de romper infraestructura para obtener proyectiles con los cuales intentan resistir el avance de los policías. La tercera fotografía muestra a personal de salud que presta servicios de primeros auxilios a los manifestantes heridos y ahogados por el efecto de los gases pimienta y/o lacrimógenos. Por último, la cuarta fotografía muestra a los denominados “bomberos”, quienes son los encargados de apagar los cartuchos de bombas lacrimógenas lanzadas por la policía, portando bidones con una mezcla de líquidos que inhiben el gas.
¿Por qué es importante esta fotografía en particular en su investigación?
La investigación busca reconocer los principales repertorios de movilización social surgidos durante la revuelta popular desarrollada en Chile entre fines de 2019 y comienzos de 2020. A priori, se propone denominarlos como “micro-repertorios de resistencia”, con el objetivo de destacar las lógicas de organización de las y los manifestantes, así como las formas de relación/alteración entre protestantes y entorno. La recolección de estas imágenes corresponden a un trabajo de campo, ejercido como parte de la labor del investigador en tanto miembro del medio independiente Piensa Prensa. Éstas fueron recogidas en las calles cercanas a la ex Plaza Italia, entre noviembre de 2019 y enero 2020. Las fotografías, en concreto, aportan a la comprensión de los fenómenos sociales manifestados durante las jornadas de movilización más intensas. Los registros permiten un acercamiento práctico de las corrientes teóricas de la protesta política, sino que, además, contribuyen a comprender las diversas subjetividades expresadas, los repertorios de resistencia que se gestaron contra la represión estatal y la relevancia de los medios alternativos para la cobertura de estas expresiones sociales.
Repertoires of the Resistance

In the streets close to “Plaza de la Dignidad” during the popular revolt, new repertoires of protest began to be seen or, rather, new types of resistance, in response to the repressive attacks of the police. The first of these is the so-called “first line”, which is the group of protesters who gather together with shields, helmets, and other elements, leading the confrontations with the police. Their actions represent a form of protection for the other protesters against police repression, as seen in the first photograph. Then there are the pirquineros, who are responsible for breaking up infrastructure in order to obtain projectiles with which they try to resist the advance of the police. The third photograph shows health workers providing first aid services to injured protesters and affected by the effect of pepper gas and/or tear gas. Finally, the fourth photograph shows the so-called “firefighters”, who are responsible for extinguishing tear gas cannisters fired by the police, carrying containers with a mixture of liquids that inhibit the gas.
Why are these photographs important for your research?
The research is intended to identify the main repertoires of social protest that emerged during the popular uprising that took place in Chile between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. A priori, the proposal is to call them “micro-repertoires of resistance”, with the aim of highlighting the organizational logics of the protesters, as well as the forms of relationships/alteration between protesters and the environment. These photographs were collected during fieldwork carried out as part of the researcher’s activities as a member of the independent media group Piensa Prensa. They were taken in the streets near the area formerly known as Plaza Italia, between November 2019 and January 2020. The photographs specifically contribute to the understanding of the social phenomena manifested during the most intense days of demonstrations. The records allow a practical approach to the theoretical currents of political protest, but also contribute to understanding the various subjectivities expressed, the repertoires of resistance that were created against state repression, and the relevance of alternative media to cover these social expressions.
