En agosto de 2022 se realiza por primera vez el festival de difusión de las ciencias, humanidades y artes Puerto de Ideas Biobío, en las ciudades de Concepción y Talcahuano. El Festival toma forma en distintas locaciones de las ciudades, específicamente, en el Teatro Dante de Talcahuano; el Teatro, la Pinacoteca y el auditorio de Humanidades, de la Universidad de Concepción; el auditorio del Colegio Médico; y el Teatro Regional del Biobío. La temática principal de las distintas actividades es la importancia del mar, los océanos y la naturaleza en el contexto del cambio climático global.
Las fotografías plasman distintos intercambios que ocurren durante el Festival entre humanos y objetos no humanos, donde se interactúa con figuras de animales como una ballena hecha de botellas plásticas que contiene información sobre su naturaleza y el océano, y con un pulpo parlante que a través de sus tentáculos reproduce el sonido de un documental que se proyecta en una pantalla continua sobre el cuidado del océano. Durante el festival se realizan charlas sobre distintos aspectos del pensamiento ecológico y la importancia de cuidar el océano, y se finaliza con un concierto temático que mezcla en vivo la música, la pintura y el dibujo con mensajes sobre la importancia de cuidar el planeta.
¿Por qué son importantes estas fotografías en particular para su investigación?
Las imágenes nos permiten visualizar las distintas acciones humanas y no humanas que emergen en un festival de ciencia pública. Revelan y capturan como se ensamblan estos dispositivos y artefactos que dan paso a que pueda ocurrir la acción humana de la comunicación, permitiendo la realización de las distintas actividades donde la ciencia circula como lo común en el espacio producido por el festival.
Las fotografías muestran momentos, donde se fusionan por medio de interacciones, los distintos mensajes sobre la importancia y el cuidado del mar, el océano y la naturaleza, para las distintas formas de vida que habitan la tierra y se encuentran amenazadas por el cambio climático. Las imágenes capturan las interacciones humanas que son permitidas por distintos artefactos tecnológicos no humanos como pantallas, dispositivos de audio, traductores, las locaciones mismas donde se desarrolla el Festival y se produce la comunicación y difusión científica que hace circular el conocimiento entre quienes exponen y el público.
Festival Puerto de Ideas Biobío: Linking science, oceans, the sea and nature within climate change.

In august of 2022, the cities of Concepción and Talcahuano hosted the first Puerto de Ideas Biobío, a festival of sciences, humanities, and arts. The festival was held in multiple locations: the Dante Theater in Talcahuano; the Theater, the Art Gallery, and the Humanities Auditorium of the University of Concepción; the Auditorium of the College of Physicians; and the Biobío Theater in Concepción. The main theme of the diverse activities was the importance of the sea, the oceans and nature within the context of global climate change.
The photographs show the different exchanges that occurred between humans and non-human objects during the festival, where one could interact with animal figures such as a whale made of plastic bottles that provided information about its nature and the ocean, or with a talking octopus that, though its tentacles, played the soundtrack of a documentary about caring for the ocean. There were also talks about different aspects of ecological thinking and the importance of caring for the ocean. It ended with a thematic concert that combined live music, painting and drawing with messages about the importance of caring for the planet.
Why are those particular photographs important to your research?
The images allow us to see the distinct human and non-human actions that emerge in a public science festival. They show how these devices and artefacts are put together, allowing human communicative action to occur, and permitting the realization of activities where science circulates as the common element within the space generated by the festival.
The photographs show those moments in which the diverse messages about the care and importance of the sea, the ocean and nature, and how they affect different forms of life on earth that are threatened by climate change, are crystalized through interactions. The images capture these relationships with diverse non-human technological artefacts such as screens, audio devices, translators, and the very locales being used by the festival where communication and scientific outreach make knowledge circulate among the speakers and the public.
